Irish Sport Horses, the Countess Cathleen
2008 was an exciting time for us here at Tullow. Major showring successes & highlight of the year, the arrival of our purebred mare (in foal) from Ireland.

In March we headed down to the Royal Melbourne Summer Show, recognised as the largest Breed Show in Australia. For the first time Irish Draughts & Sport Horses had their own ring & classes to fill the day. Entries were great & the three exhibits from Tullow Stud could not have gone better.
The Countess Cathleen winning the broodmare class, her filly foal Tullows Turn Back Time took the blue ribbon in the foal class & then Tullows Drama Queen showed off her big, expressive trot to clinch the mare/gelding over 4 years. The ‘girls’ then secured Champion & Reserve Female with “Eimar” (Tullows Drama Queen) pipping the Champion Male at the post for the Breed Supreme Sash. An exciting day & a real buzz for small time breeders like us.

Only a month later Richmondlea Delia arrived in Australia. Bought as a foal in 2002 having spotted her in the line up at the Dublin Horse Show, she remained  with good friends in Ireland where she produced two foals. A filly by the TB  Billie’s Bank & a colt by the Irish Draught Crannagh Hero. She went back in foal to Crannagh Hero (considered one of the best moving Draughts in Ireland) before “emigrating”.

In August we nervously awaited the arrival of her foal & on Thusday 7th August
whilst feeding out breakfast, around the corner of the shelter following her Mum trotted a bright & bouncy chestnut filly! Delia had dealt with foaling all on her own, without setting off the alarm!

Meanwhile Tullows All or Nothing was back with Will Enzinger & progressing well. Still a big immature baby, he’s being taken along quietly with a few outings planned for 2009.

In October Richmondlea Delia & her filly Tullows Live The Dream (Dana) had an outing to Lancefield Agi Show, taking it all in their stride & coming away with a couple of blue ribbons & a Champion In Hand Sash.

November was Equitana. The Irish Draught & Sport Horse Soc. Had a display stand in the Breeders Village & it was a full on four days with a heap of visitors & a huge amount of interest in our breed. Our handout stickers said it all

“Irish Horses the Breed You Need”

Champagne corks were popping at Tullow on the first weekend in February.

Having had to withdraw our entries from the Irish classes at this year’s Summer Royal
(congratulations to Icarus Park Stud who swept the board in the Championships), a week later the Tullow Team headed off to the Irish Draught & Sport Horse Soc. Breed Show. Youngstock and In-Hand classes were well supported, though numbers dropped off for the afternoon ridden classes (something to do with a week of 40 degree plus temperatures??) Judge for the day was well respected hunting man Colin Edwards, a former Master of the Oaklands Hunt Club. So it was a real thrill for us to have our imported Draught mare Richmondlea Delia chosen as his Champion In Hand.
In the ridden classes, four year old Tullows All or Nothing was judged winner in the Potential Dressage Horse class (we’re hoping that’s a good omen for his future eventing career!) before defeating some older horses to be sashed Champion Ridden.
A great day and a big thank you to the Irish Draught & Sport Horse Soc. for the very attractive championship rugs that we received.

Three out of three!

Positive preg. tests all round, with The Countess Cathleen in foal to Aurum Park’s TB

We eagerly await Spring 2009!

A World Apart

We love hearing from our happy owners & recently received emails from both sides of the world, updating us on a couple of Tullow youngsters.

“Tullows Hero” (now 2 years old) headed off to his first show in England with owner Laura King. Over to Laura, “ I took him to his first show yesterday, in the Youngstock class we won & in the Condition class came 2nd, narrowly missing 1st. He was absolutely fantastic, oh & the judge loved him too!!”
“I couldn’t believe how well he went, he behaved impeccably”.

Whilst here in Australia Cathy Deeker & “Tullows Emerald Ties” tackled their first horse trials. Cathy emailed “I thought you might like to see Emmie & I in action, we had great fun, she is like a seasoned campaigner” “She is so laid back about cross-country, I really think she looks after me in that regard! She was also fantastic in the show-jumping as well & went around the course as though she had designed it herself!”
“On the weekend people were constantly commenting on her temperament & how calm she was”.

Good Luck Girls.
Winter Update

With the Northern Hemisphere show season in full swing results came through recently from the Irish Draught Horse Breeders Assoc. annual event (run by the Wicklow Branch.) This increasingly popular show now in its third year attracted record entries from throughout Ireland, with over 90 pure & part bred Draughts being exhibited.
Here at Tullow we were delighted to see that both the Foal Champion – a filly out of Maybe Jaybe & the overall Youngstock Champion Crannagh Warrior were sired by Crannagh Hero, “Dad” of our own Tullows Live The Dream (imported from Ireland in utero.)

At the Irish Draught Horse Breeders National Show the filly championship
had Crannagh Hero progeny taking the champion & reserve position with the 2 year old filly  Inisfree Snowy River (Crannagh Hero x White River)
going on to stand Reserve Supreme Champion.

Whilst at the world renowned Dublin Horse Show the Ridden Irish Draught this year was won by Castlerock by Crosstown Dancer (sire of  Richmondlea Delia) who then went on to take the Amateur Hunter Championship. In the broodmare class the Crannagh Hero sired Killountain Ginger won the four year old & under before standing Reserve Champion to Millhollow Starlet. This young mare in fact took the Championship ribbon the previous year as a three year old, when it was reported that “Beautifully bred by Crannagh Hero out of a Ginger Dick mare, Killountain Ginger combines some of the best Draught performance lines as well as fulfilling the show ring criteria”  (The Irish Field).
Meanwhile back here in Victoria we headed out to see “Eamon” (Tullows All or Nothing) have his first dressage outing with Will Enzinger. A great result with placings in both tests and percentages in the high 60’s.

CONGRATULATIONS
Will Enzinger & "Eamon"
(Tullows All or Nothing)
